The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Binary Filter is a compact and unobtrusive, analog multi-mode filter. This classic-style filter module is ideal for a range of applications from affecting modular synth sounds to shaping the way your input signals work. Based on the filter from the Lifeforms SV-1 unit, the Binary Filter module provides you with a smooth and natural sound filter. The natural sound is in-part thanks to the state variable topology and premium-grade components. It features a range of patch points, including dedicated outputs for each of the filter responses. It also features a two-position switch for toggling between ‘Stable’ and ‘Unstable’ modes.
The Binary Filter module not only provides a natural sound, but it includes three different filter responses. The responses are comprised of: lowpass, highpass and bandpass. These varying filter modes can be used for a range of adjustments. The stability switch allows you to switch the state of filter. In Stable modes, the filter doesn’t self-oscillate, providing you with an organic-sounding filter. The Unstable mode; with an input audio signal, will deliver a voltage controlled sine wave, with the ‘Q;’ controlling the shape of the waveform. The incoming signal at standard settings modulates the filter to produce a variety of complex sound. At more extreme settings the filter can achieve heavy distortion when using incoming audio.
