Build layered drum sounds your way
Backbone gives you complete control over drum creation with support for up to eight individual sample layers. Every layer can be processed independently using subtractive synthesis, filters, envelopes, re-synthesis, and Decompose processing, allowing you to blend multiple sound sources into a single instrument. The perfect solution for combining acoustic samples with electronic textures or creating cinematic impacts, each element remains fully editable throughout the process. This flexible architecture also makes Backbone suitable for designing bass sounds, risers, swooshes, and other sample-based effects.
Generate fresh sounds with AI
Backbone includes DrumGAN, an AI-powered drum generator developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories. It creates original kick drums, snares, and cymbals in seconds, giving you a fast starting point for new ideas. DrumGAN can also analyse an existing sample, recreate its overall character, and generate multiple related variations. That makes it useful when you want a familiar sound with subtle differences, or when building complementary drum layers while staying entirely within Backbone's editing environment.
Transform samples with spectral re-synthesis
The Resynth section converts your sample into a spectral representation that can be manipulated in ways conventional playback cannot achieve. Speed it up dramatically, slow it down, or freeze playback completely to create static, oscillator-like textures. By adjusting the playback position, you can isolate different spectral moments within the original sample, producing fresh harmonic material while retaining the character of the source. This gives you another creative tool for building distinctive drum sounds from familiar audio.
Separate every element of a sample
Backbone's Decompose function splits a sample into independent tonal and noise components for detailed editing. You can take the low-end punch from one kick, combine it with the transient noise of another, or blend harmonic content from a synth bass with the texture of a field recording. Each component can then be processed separately before being layered back together, making it easy to create highly customised drums and percussion that would be difficult to achieve with standard sample editing alone.
Reviews
"What Backbone brings to the table is an entirely new way of going about drum sound design, an approach that allows you to blend different characteristics of different samples in different ways, while remaining quick, intuitive, and fun throughout. There’s nothing like it, so be sure to try out the demo." - MusicTech
"Other than its unprecedented sound design capabilities, Backbone’s musicality is really what strikes me. I can give my sounds a unique attitude and personality like never before. This bad boy is packed with punch and generously delivers instant gratification." - Sorcery – Drummer and Producer
